Use of the indicative mood

The function of the indicative mood is to express that what is said is real, actual. Its German name is Wirklichkeitsform (reality form).

Er schläft.

The indicative, however, is also used in sentences expressing questions, hypotheses, possibilities, suppositions, doubts and requests. Very often, these modal meanings are expressed by the context or by means of adverbs and other complements in the sentence:

Wahrscheinlich schläft er.
Ich vermute, dass er schläft.
Er soll schlafen.
Du wirst jetzt sofort schlafen!
Dornröschen schlief hundert Jahre lang.

The indicative is the standard mood in discussions, stories, texts, etc. It is always used when neither the subjunctive nor the imperative can or must be used. The indicative mood is the most frequently used mood.
