e-Deletion in the ending

When a verb stem ending in unstressed el or er is combined with the endings en, end, est, and et, the e of the ending is deleted.

The e of the ending is deleted in the following forms:

Ending en:
  • Present infinitive
  • Present indicative 1st & 3rd person plural
  • Subjunctive present 1st & 3rd person plural
Ending end:
  • Present participle
Endings est and et:
  • Subjunctive present 2nd person singular and 2nd person plural
    With these forms, the e-deletion in the stem is also common (see below).
    The forms with deleted e are identical with the forms of the present indicative
    du sammelst (instead of sammelest), ihr sammelt (instead of sammelet)
    du änderst (instead of du änderest), ihr ändert (instead of änderet)

e-Deletion in the stem

When a verb stem ending in unstressed el is combined with the ending e, the e of the stem is usually deleted, but it can also be maintained. The e of the stem can also be deleted before est and et.

The e of the stem is deleted in the following forms:

Ending e:
  • Present indicative 1st person singular
  • Present subjunctive 1st & 3rd person singular
  • Imperative singular
Ending est and et:
  • Subjunctive present 2nd person singular and 2nd person plural
    With these forms, the e-deletion in the ending is also common (see above).
In general, this kind of e-deletion does not occur in verb stems ending in er .
